Do you remember the old Malaysian oils?
Not merely oud from Malaysia, but those oils with weight to them — dark, incense-laden, unapologetically punchy. Oils that seemed to carry the forest and the stillness of another time in every drop.
We missed them too.
SEYDA began with a question:
What would it take to distill an oil with that old Malaysian soul again?
Was it the wood?
The soaking?
The technique?
Or that elusive harmony between all three?
For the wood, we brought together two Malaysian origins in equal measure: 50% Kelantan and 50% Terengganu. Two characters, two landscapes, meeting inside the same still.
The wood received only a short two-day soak — just enough to loosen the fibres and awaken what lay within, carefully controlled so the material remained clean and true, never wandering into unwanted fermentation.
Then came the distillation.
We turned to the Yusa style, but not without leaving our own fingerprint upon it. With our new still, we were able to reach further into the wood, drawing out deeper notes that might otherwise remain hidden beneath the surface.
And there, slowly, SEYDA revealed itself.
From the first swipe, nose numbing burst of purple, there is something strangely vintage about it. The opening could almost convince you that you had applied a decades-old Papuan distillation: dark, weighty and saturated with the resinous character of old sinking wood.
At its centre lies a dense core of blackened Malaysian resin, polished antique wood and gently smouldering agarwood. Around it hangs a powdery floral haze, reminiscent of an old library where dry paper, aged timber and incense smoke have slowly become part of the same atmosphere.
Then comes Seyda's signature.
A stroke of purple ink appears through the darkness.
It stains the resin with dusty violet hues as deep, narcotic florals begin to emerge: shadowy jasmine, dried petals and an almost indefinable purple floral sweetness. The effect is neither conventionally floral nor sweet. It feels as though the flowers themselves have been absorbed into ancient resin.
The Kelantan character gives Seyda its darker gravity: earthy woods, mineral shadows, bitter resin and an old-world medicinal depth. Terengganu brings another dimension, lifting that darkness with the perfumed, purple-toned resinous character for which exceptional Malaysian agarwood is treasured.
As the oil settles, the contrast becomes increasingly beautiful. Burning oud wood remains glowing at the centre, surrounded by dusty florals, purple ink, antique books, dark resin and faint traces of humid forest.
There is no attempt to make Seyda bright or immediately seductive. Its beauty lies deeper, in the sensation of smelling exceptionally resinous Malaysian wood transformed into oil without losing the soul of the wood itself.
Purple ink. Dusty dark florals. Antique library woods. Smouldering agarwood & black resin.
A dark, meditative Malaysian oud built around the character of exceptional Kelantan and Terengganu wood.
SEYDA is our remembrance of the old Malaysian style, distilled through a new still.
